Last Weeks…….

Dear Odyssey Families,

It is difficult to believe that we are approaching the end of our program for 2017! Your children have stepped into our routines and our culture beautifully, and we are ending the summer with pride in the accomplishments and growth we are witnessing.

Our last week will include post testing, completion of each grade level’s PBL, Field Day, and our Closing Program. You can help your child with the post assessment process by making sure they are getting adequate rest each night, eating a healthy breakfast,  and arriving to school on time. Field Day will take place on Tuesday, July 11th. The younger students will have water relays, dance fun, and Battle Ball rotations from 10:30 until 12:00. Chick Fil A is treating all students to a special lunch at 12:15. The older students will have their activities from 1:00 until 2:30. Your children will get wet, so send a dry set of clothing or clothes that dry quickly. Students may wear swim wear under clothing that day, and all students are asked to wear running shoes.

You are invited to join us at 8:30 on Friday, July 14th, for a closing program that includes classroom visits and a celebration in the Hamilton Room. Your children will showcase and discuss their PBL projects and you will have a chance to view some work in other special area classrooms. Classroom visits will be from 8:30 until 9:15, and the closing program will begin shortly afterwards and run until 10:30.

Please note that Friday, July 14th is a half day. You may sign out your children when you leave. If you are unable to attend, please let us know if your child will be riding the bus. Please check our main Odyssey site for bus schedule updates.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us this summer. It truly has been a joy and a privilege for us. Please check the home site throughout the year for application information and important updates.

Wonderful start!

Dear Odyssey Families,

Thank you so very much for helping us launch our summer program with purpose and high energy. Your children are coming in rested and ready to learn, and they have embraced our routines with enthusiasm and serious commitment. We appreciate your honoring of our attendance policies and  arrival and departure times. If your child has a change in transportation, please know that we many not see a late afternoon message. Car riders should be picked up between 4:30 and 4:45, and this will prevent a child from missing the bus if there is confusion.

Next week we have several field trips: Fourth grade to The Georgia State Capitol on Monday the 19th (9:30 – 11:30); Third Grade to The High Museum for a STEAM workshop on Wednesday, the 21st (9:30 – 11:30); Second Grade to The Blue Heron Nature Center on Wednesday, June 21st (9:30 – 10:00);  Fifth grade to The King Center on Thursday, June 22nd (9:00 – 11:00). We will provide Odyssey tee shirts to wear on these trips. You also may want to send a water bottle on field trip days.

The students are moving into their grade level Projects through which we are teaching academic skills and higher level critical thinking. Ask your children about their learning each day and I think you will be amazed. They have written self reflections pieces that would touch your heart and make you very proud as well.

First Day Welcome!

Dear Parents,

We are so happy that our first day of Odyssey is finally here! Our team has been working all year to ensure that Summer 2017 is a rich experience in learning for every Odyssey student. Our goal is that our students will grow in academic skill and motivation, leadership, friendships and collaboration, and confidence that comes with trying new things.

Our teachers will meet students at the bus on Monday morning, and we ask that you return or create a written note that includes your child’s name and grade level, bus # or pick-up/drop off location, and any additional information that will help us get your child home safely and on the correct bus. The first week can be a bit confusing for the kids, so we ask that you give them the information that will help them negotiate, and hopefully enjoy, the transportation process.

Your children are welcome to bring a book bag if they choose, but it is not necessary. We will provide all supplies and materials needed for our school day. We will offer a fruit snack each day around 2:30, and you are welcome to send in your own snack if your child needs more than the breakfast, lunch, and snack that we provide. We do ask that the snack be healthy and peanut-free. (Westminster Lower School is a designated “peanut free” school, and we will be sharing our space with many other camps and programs.) You all also encouraged to send a water bottle for your child. We will allow this in the classroom and all areas.

Welcome to our Families!

We are looking forward to an amazing six weeks with your children as we welcome returning and new students! Our Odyssey teachers have been working diligently already on the programs, lessons, and plans we have for this summer. All teachers took part in two full-day planning sessions during which we developed projects and themes for each class and each grade. The kids will benefit from project based learning designs and opportunities for experiential, authentic learning.

Families will receive bus schedules over the next few weeks, and we ask that you communicate clearly to your child the bus and school drop-off for pick up and departure each day. Please send a note with your child the first day naming the bus route and pick-up location. The excitement of the first day can cause our younger kids to experience some confusion about their travel plans.

Please send your children in comfortable clothes that will allow them to play outside and in the gym. Please honor our request for “modest” clothing styles with no spaghetti straps or short shorts. Also, we ask that you leave electronics at home, as they cause a major distraction during our day. You may send a cell phone if you have concerns about travel, but please ask your child to take it out only when a call to home is critical to their well-being.

We will provide breakfast, lunch, and a healthy snack each day. Please make sure we are aware on the first day of any food allergies. You are welcome to send in a healthy snack as well if you feel that your child needs this in addition to our offerings.
